Benefits of pursuing a Ph.D.
Why should you enrol for a Ph D?
I have read all the blogs under the sun about this topic. You know all the glossy "4 reasons why you should do a PhD", "why a PhD is worth it" etc. I am not saying they are unhelpful, but they tend to offer an unrealistic viewpoint, so this is my take. I may get in trouble for being so honest, but this is the kind of realism we need in the academic community!

Ft. the straight hard truth!
When the idea first popped into my head about filming this video… I initially was going to sugarcoat it. But you know what, I just wanna be real and honest for a second...
We all know doing a PhD can be difficult and mentally draining, but the end goal is so rewarding. I cannot wait for the day I can tick the 'Dr' box. It’s like a representation of all our hard work, ambition, intelligence, knowledge, passion, dedication and so much more. So let’s embrace that! I cannot understand why some researchers deny the fact it doesn't interest them.
However, it's always important to remember to remain humble and modest. There is always more to learn about there, so don't let the doctoral ego take over.
This was one of the main reasons I initially chose to do a PhD. I love learning and constantly expanding my knowledge. After graduating from my master's 13 years ago and going straight into industry work, I missed being in education and the academic environment. I felt like I still had a lot more to offer, so in 2021 I decided to apply for a PhD program at the University of Derby, in the sector of Human Resources.
Don't get me wrong, it hasn't been easy. But I love to learn, read and explore new ideas and perspectives. There's nothing more rewarding than that!
One of the great things about doing a PhD is the freedom of passion. If you are genuinely interested in a particular topic, doing research about it doesn't feel like working. Conducting research is so interesting and the thought of eventually being able to apply my knowledge in the real-world setting is so fulfilling.
However, it is important to remember your passion will go through a rollercoaster journey. Some days you may be excited to sit down, read journals and scroll through Google Scholar, but there will also be days where you cannot stand the sight of it. But it's important to have a reality check and remember why you started. Once the four years are over and I finally submit my thesis, I cannot wait to say "I'm an expert in that field". But more importantly than that, you can take all your knowledge and expertise and apply that to real life. You have the ability to make important, and real valuable contributions to society. Nothing beats that feeling.
The PhD experience is what you make it! Throughout my PhD journey, I have met so many amazing and inspiring scientists along the way, during conferences and events. Its important to try be sociable, friendly, and relatable. We're all going through a similar journey, despite our different research areas. Talking to new people can potentially open new doors and opportunities, that will be so valuable to you in your future career.
To conclude, if any of these factors appeal to you, you should definitely consider applying for a PhD. Do some research, try to figure out what inspires you and remember to take it slow. It's not a smooth or easy process, but it is definitely rewarding. I recently made a TikTok video to advise post-grad students on their PhD application journey, click here to watch.
